A brand new Plastic Bag Free Chesham bag has been launched.
It's organic cotton and it's Fairtrade.
What does
Fairtrade mean?
Fairtrade means that the people involved in the production of goods have been given a fair wage and are not exploited. Chesham is a Fairtrade town so this was important to us when looking for a supplier. See how the bag was made .
Why Organic?
Cotton is prone to a bug that bores into the cotton buds and destroys the crop. For this reason they have to be sprayed with insecticide. However, there are several levels of insecticide and some cause far more harm than others. Organic cotton is better for the environment. It is also safer for the people growing the cotton. In some areas, the health and safety of the sprayers is not given much attention - with dire consequences.
By offering a Fairtrade and Organic bag the price will be a little higher than others you can buy, but it will be working towards a fairer and healthier world.
